New Application: Liquid Explosives DetectionPorton Down, UK - Governmental agencies and security contractors are racing to develop more advanced technologies for the detection of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Detection of liquid and multi-component explosives is a big challenge for aviation security requiring advanced detection methods. Conventional detection systems using vapor tracing or spectroscopy methods often take too much time and only allow for spot tests. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems are effective but too costly for mass deployment. Ultimately security experts are hoping to combat terrorism with a broad ‘toolbox’ of available techniques in ensuring terrorists are unable to strategize around a single detection method. One method developed by C-Therm Technologies provides complimentary and unique capabilities in the testing for liquid explosives in offering characterization capability through metal containers (e.g. pop cans) that other techniques are unable to penetrate through. C-Therm’s technique also offers the capability to test through translucent materials (plastics, glass, etc.).
